The Shangaan people belong to the Kumalo clan of the Ndwandwe who, in the early nineteenth century, under their Chief, Zwide, were the most formidable opponents of the Zulu nation under Shaka. Zwide made war on Shaka, but was defeated and driven out of his ancestral lands and fled north with his people.

A faction led by Soshangana whose name they adopted, were attacked by Shaka's impis in the Londolozi. A fierce battle ensued. Soshangana's regiments massacred Shaka's impis. Fearing reprisals Soshangana fled, settling north of Delagoa Bay (Maputo). They were the forbears of the present-day Shangaan. Today their range covers the south eastern parts of Zimbabwe and neighbouring parts of Mozambique.

Skilled hunters, this new home teaming with wildlife suited them well, their hunting and tracking prowess rivaled only by the San bushmen of the Kalahari.

They developed a deep understanding and respect for their environment and its game. In their own unique way, they were the true pioneers of sustainable utilisation, taking only what was needed and conserving the environment for future generations.

In recognition of this model, we honor thier name by choosing it as our own.
